On behalf of Kodolányi János University College, I extend a warm welcome to delegates to the EUROCALL conference. This is the second time that a EUROCALL conference is held in Hungary. János Kohn was the head of the organizing committee of the conference in 1996. He was a highly valued and respected EUROCALL colleague, who died in March 1999. EUROCALL established the János Kohn Scholarship to commemorate and celebrate his life and work.
The theme of this year’s conference is CALL: new competences and social spaces. Our aim is to focus attention on the changing concepts and practices concerning new competences and social spaces in language learning and teaching. The rapid change and technological advancement in information and communication technologies can facilitate more diverse and learner-centred learning environments but these are not guaranteed.
Teaching and learning practices need to change in an environment of change and more emphasis should be put on curricular issues instead of focusing on technical ones. Careful reflection and pedagogical consideration need to support the learning process where technology is integrated in order to use technology to its potentials. Teachers need to develop a reflective approach to using the tools and know more about the pedagogical underpinnings so that they would be able to keep abreast of the changes and improve their practices.
We hope that the conference will be both enjoyable and productive for you, and that the participants’ collaborative efforts in the next few days will produce significant contributions to the field of CALL, more specifically, add to our knowledge on ‘CALL: New competences and social spaces’ as the conference theme suggests.
We are delighted that EUROCALL has selected Székesfehérvár in Hungary for its meeting this year. I would like to wish you all a successful, exciting and enjoyable stay.
