Invitation of the Congress ChairDentistry began to exploit the diagnostic potential of x-rays just two weeks after Roentgen presented his discovery at the University of Wurttemberg. Dental radiography then went on to develop independently, partly through the assistance of dedicated technicians and manufacturers.
Panoramic radigraphy, specifically developed for dentistry, was the next significant advance in imaging technique and was subsequently refined to incorporate different types of digital evaluation.
The most recent innovation in Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology is Three Dimentional Imaging of the facial skeleton and skull, which is able to provide quantitative solutions and precise guidance in such diverse dental disciplines as Implantology, Orthodontics, Paedodontics, Oral and especially Reconstructive Surgery, TMJ problems, Prosthetics, and last but not least the rapidly growing speciality of Periodontics.
In order to meet this challenge DMFR should be considered a speciality in every country, with an internationally recognized training pathway and qualifying examinations as well as opportunities for continuing research and development.
The International Association of Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology was founded thirty nine years ago in Santiago, Chile followed by the 1st European DMFR Congress in Geneva 19 years later. IADMFR held its 9th Congress in Budapest, Hungary 17 years ago. Thanks to the goodwill of our colleagues Budapest has another chance to act as host in 2008, this time to a European Congress, and to extend the traditional hospitality of this country coupled with an opportunity to exchange new ideas, "brainstorm" new solutions to the imaging revolution posed for instance by Cone Beam CT, as well the chance to view innovative products. The Organizing Committee will endeavour to satisfy every need of the participants. So once again welcome to Hungary!
